# 해양학연구내용
이상묵 교수는 우리나라의 대표적인 해양지구물리학자로 지구표면의 움직임과 구조를 전지구적인 관점에서 바라보고 있다. 2006년 교통사고로 목 이하가 완전마비가 되기 전까지 수많은 해양탐사를 진두지휘했다. 사고 이후 그는 현장탐사 이외에 수학과 컴퓨터로 자연현상을 예측하는 계산과학 분야에 뛰어들었으며 또한 장애인들의 고등교육 분야에도 관여하였다. 그는 장애인과 관련된 많은 정부위원회에서 활동하고 있다. 최근(2020년 이후)부터는 국제 중앙해령연구협의체의 회장을 맡고 있으며 서울대의 10-10 사업의 일환으로 추진되고 있는 Planet A 의 사업책임자로서 글로벌 데이터 허브와 인공지능 알고리즘 등을 이용해 지속발전 가능한 사회를 만드는 데에 기여하고 있다. 그가 행한 2015년 국회 국정감사에서의 증언은 당시까지 정부소속 기관들만이 사용하던 우리나라의 대표적인 대형 대양 연구선들을 대학을 비롯한 학계 전반이 사용할 수 있도록 하는 선진적인 계기가 되었다.
