Title: Stratified Shelf-Ocean and Fetch-Dependent Sea-State Responses to Large-Scale Offshore Wind Farms

Abstract:
Large-scale offshore wind farms modify the transfer of momentum and energy across the air–sea interface through turbine-induced wind wake, with consequences for the upper ocean, the surface wave field, and the near-surface atmosphere. This seminar presents recent results from high-resolution coupled atmosphere–ocean–wave simulations representing a maximum-buildout scenario for offshore wind development along the U.S. East Coast continental shelf. Over seasonally stratified shelf regions, wake-induced reductions in wind stress suppress upper-ocean mixing and entrainment cooling, enhancing stratification and shoaling the mixed layer. The resulting SST anomalies increase upward heat fluxes and destabilize the marine atmospheric boundary layer, producing measurable ocean-to-atmosphere feedback that is largely confined to the atmospheric surface layer. Weaker wind forcing also suppresses wind-sea growth, reducing significant wave height and wave-supported stress while shifting the wave energy spectrum toward longer-period, older sea states. These responses are strongly fetch-dependent, reflecting regional differences in the relative contributions of locally generated wind seas and remotely generated swell.  The results show that offshore wind farm impacts extend beyond atmospheric wakes and are shaped by both shelf-ocean stratification and wave-generation regimes. The findings highlight the value of a fully coupled modeling approach for assessing environmental impacts of large-scale offshore wind development and may ultimately inform wind-farm layout designs that reduce environmental impacts while maintaining efficient energy production.
