Title: High-Altitude Airborne Observations of UTLS Turbulence during NASA Field Campaigns

Abstract:
Atmospheric turbulence in the upper troposphere to lower stratosphere (UTLS) plays an important role in the transport and mixing of heat, momentum, and atmospheric constituents, while also posing significant hazards to aviation, including high-altitude platform systems (HAPS) operating near 20 km. Although atmospheric turbulence has been studied using a variety of observational platforms, most in situ measurements are obtained from commercial aircraft operating below approximately 15 km along established flight corridors in typically quiescent atmospheric conditions. As part of NASA’s Airborne Science Program (ASP), research aircraft are routinely deployed during airborne field campaigns to support NASA’s science missions, including satellite calibration and validation, process studies, and instrument development. These campaigns, using high-altitude aircraft such as the NASA WB-57 and ER-2, provide high-resolution in situ measurements of turbulence and other atmospheric variables throughout the UTLS. This seminar will present recent observational results based on in situ measurements collected during recently completed NASA airborne field campaigns, including observations of overshooting convection and its surrounding UTLS environment. It will also introduce ongoing efforts to improve high-altitude turbulence prediction using in situ measurements collected under a wide range of atmospheric conditions from 2015 to 2025, together with operational numerical weather prediction model output.
