Title: Dinosaur eggs: from macro- to microstructures
[Abstract]
Dinosaur egg is a kind of vertebrate fossil that is well-known by its various shape, size, and arrangement in nest. Although mother dinosaurs of egg fossils are usually unknown, the macrostructures of dinosaur eggs can reflect the size and nesting behavior of the mother dinosaurs. This presentation will take well-studied oviraptor as an example, and introduce the unique nesting behavior of this kind of dinosaur.
Except for the macrostructures of dinosaur eggs, microstructures of dinosaur eggshells are research hotspots as well. Compared with those of modern birds and reptiles, the diversity of eggshell microstructure of dinosaurs is extremely high. Researchers established an independent taxonomic system for dinosaur eggs based on their eggshell microstructures. Pore canals are one of the most important features of dinosaur eggshells, which can be used to infer the micro-environment of dinosaur nests. The spatiotemporal distribution of specific types of dinosaur eggs can exhibit the evolutional trends of dinosaur eggs, and the paleogeographic distributions of certain kinds of dinosaurs.
