연구내용
심민섭 교수는 지질학에서 생물학에 걸친 다양한 실험방법을 이용해 암석이나 퇴적물에 미생물들이 남긴 물리, 화학적인 흔적을 읽어낼 수 있는 도구를 마련하고자 하며, 이를 이용해 대멸종과 같은 암석에 기록된 과거의 환경변화나 현재 인류가 직면한 환경문제에서 미생물의 역할을 밝혀내고, 또 지구 밖의 행성에서 생명 활동을 추적하는 데에도 이바지하고자 한다.
