Title: Mountains, rainfall, and global warming pattern

Abstract:
Mountains shape atmospheric flow and wind patterns, thereby influencing the climate state and its response to forcing. Global warming patterns strongly affect tropical rainfall, cloud feedbacks, and estimates of climate sensitivity, yet models struggle to reproduce the observed pattern of recent Pacific warming. We show that a surprisingly simple source of this error is the smoothed representation of mountain ranges along the western Americas. Restoring more realistic peak elevations reduces tropical rainfall biases, including the double-intertropical convergence zone (double-ITCZ) bias, and produces a more realistic historical Pacific warming pattern through linked changes in atmospheric circulation, ocean dynamics, land–ocean temperature contrast, marine low clouds, and reflected sunlight. Improving the representation of topography may therefore help reduce long-standing biases in tropical rainfall and Pacific warming projections.
