Title: Persistent Global Land Aridification Under Climate Mitigation Scenarios
Abstract: Understanding how global land aridification responds to climate mitigation efforts is crucial for evaluating the effectiveness of carbon neutrality strategies. Using idealized emission-driven simulations from an Earth System Model, this study reveals that increasing CO₂ levels significantly intensify aridity across vast and vulnerable dryland regions. More concerningly, even as CO₂ concentrations decline, arid zones continue to expand and experience worsening conditions. This persistent trend is largely driven by long-lasting precipitation reductions in the tropics, linked to the hysteresis of the intertropical convergence zone. The findings highlight that reversing aridification under global warming is highly challenging, requiring extended timescales even with negative CO₂ emissions. These results emphasize the irreversible risks of delayed action and the need for robust climate policies that extend beyond net-zero targets.
